Cara Horowitz Joins Board of Directors

cara-a-horowitzCara Horowitz joins the Board of Directors of the CLEO Institute! Cara is the first Andrew Sabin Family Foundation executive director of the Emmett Center on Climate Change and the Environment at UCLA Law, which is dedicated to advancing climate change law and policy. She oversees research and education on climate change issues, including federal and state regulation, international law and climate policy. Welcome aboard Cara!

Dr. Hal Wanless Joins Board of Directors

dr-harold-r-wanlessDr. Hal Wanless joins the Board of Directors of the CLEO Institute! Hal is is Professor and Chair of the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Miami and is actively interacting with policy and legislative groups at the local to federal levels to guide necessary decisions, including speaking at Everglades Coalition annual meetings, to various Florida Legislative committees, environmental and industry executive and steering committees, and the Council on Environmental Quality in the White House. Welcome Dr. Wanless and thank you for keeping us steeped in knowledge!

Caroline Lewis Speaks to MAST Academy Students

Author, poet and motivational speaker, Jonathan Walton inspired everyone with brilliant poetry and his powerful "can do" attitude as we get ready to officially launch the CLEO Youth Task Force on August 27, 2011.

Katy Sorenson Joins Board of Directors

katy-sorensonKaty Sorenson joins the Board of Directors of the CLEO Institute! Katy is the President and CEO of the Good Government Initiative at the University of Miami, a program to educate elected officials at the state and local level in the important issues of governance. Katy brings a wealth of experience and insight to our team, and has already contributed her talents in helping shape several ideas. We look forward to working with Katy and collaborating on strategies that link the CLEO Institute and her new non-profit, the Good Government Initiative. We are elated!

The CLEO Project Takes Shape

This three-year project is taking shape. The CLEO project will improve broad public understanding of and engagement in climate change issues. It includes six separate but overlapping initiatives to engage diverse groups in schools and colleges (via formal education) and in the community (via informal education). The CLEO Project will merge the efforts and energies of students, teachers, scientists, civic leaders, and artists, as well as leaders in schools, school districts, colleges, businesses and communities.

CLEO Youth Task Force (YTF): Planning Meeting

youth-task-forceOur CLEO Youth Task Force is growing as we encourage passionate high school and college students to join and to help shape a series of CLEO initiatives, large and small. These dedicated students, together with young professionals, will spearhead discussions, prioritize targets, and coordinate events to foster environmental literacy and civic engagement. Initial tasks will focus on interdisciplinary Climate Change communication as part of the CLEO Project, a three-year initiative. The YTF will be lead by a committed team of CLEO Staff Interns.

Communicating Science: Tools and Solutions

A workshop of the NSF RCN “Tropical Forests in a Changing World” La Selva Biological Station, Organization for Tropical Studies, Costa Rica 21-25 April 2011: Caroline introduced the group of expert research scientists and educators to the CLEO Institute and presented on the topic: Casting wider nets: creating dynamic engagement models to reach broader audiences.

MAST Academy's 13th Annual Contemporary Issues In Science Forum

mast-contemporary-issues-forumFebruary 2011: Caroline Lewis and several educators, scientists, business and community leaders participated in the Forum. This event is the brainchild of Dr. Wafa Khalil, master teacher, Solar I and II curriculum creator and CLEO Advisor. The forum is led by students who serve as Forum moderators, keynote speakers, topic specialists, discussion facilitators and more. This year's Forum, ECO-LOGICAL ENERGY - THE RENEWABLE STATE OF MIND, was another resounding success. The CLEO Institute is exploring how best to scale up and replicate this extremely effective and transformative interdisciplinary model.
