Food Systems

May 27 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

In this month’s webinar series, CLEO in partnership with Food Rescue US will explore our food systems. From farming practices to food waste, to what we eat, you will learn what is happening, how this is impacting our health and our economy, and what we can do about it.

Here are some things to know about food waste in the U.S.:
Millions of pounds of excess food ends up in landfills
• The USDA’s Economic Research Service estimated that approximately 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food was wasted in 2010.
• Instead of feeding people, the disposal of wasted food leads to more waste such as the unnecessary use of water, labor and energy to produce, process, transport, prepare, store, and dispose of discarded food.
• In 2010, the EPA estimated food waste at 218.9 pounds of food waste per person sent for disposal.

About Food Rescue US
Food Rescue US is committed to reducing food waste and food insecurity in America. Using technology, we engage volunteers to transfer excess fresh food from grocers, restaurants, and other sources, to social service agencies that feed people who are food insecure.
