Florida’s Youth Letter to FPL: We Need to Talk!

Florida’s Youth can see the world -and our state- not moving fast enough to tackle the climate emergency we are experiencing.

Florida is at the frontlines of the climate crisis and we need to be leading the rest of the country in a just and clean energy transition.

Here in Miami, we have been experiencing record-breaking temperatures, the rate of sea level rise is accelerating, and in the rest of the world, a plethora of natural disasters are continuously intensifying. For example:  A megadrought is threatening water reservoirs and exacerbating fires in the west, and a heatwave in India is putting more than a billion people’s lives at risk.

In Florida, we continue to utilize planet-warming fracked (methane) gas to supply 70-75% of electricity consumption. Furthemore, FPL, Florida Power & Light, our biggest utility company, is the only utility in the Southeast that has yet to commit to a 100% clean renewable goal.

To help us mitigate the critical climate problems created by Climate Change, GenCleo, the Youth Empowerment Movement Program by The CLEO Institute, has published a Letter, addressed to FPL.

The letter, published on May 9th, 2022 in the Miami Herald, is an invitation to FPL, its board members, shareholders, and its parent company, Next Era, to embrace Climate Solutions as soon as possible. FPL needs to stop its greenwashing ads and embrace clean renewable technologies, without smoking mirrors and with Climate Justice in mind.

With this letter, GenCLEO and the CLEO Institute, are inviting FPL to stop obstructing clean energy policies at Florida’s legislature, and to work together with all of us in order to protect the beautiful state of Florida, its wildlife and rich ecosystems.

The Climate Crisis is taking its toll on many different corners of the planet.

Our children’s and our current future are at stake.

Florida Power & Light Company, the principal subsidiary of NextEra Energy Inc., is the largest power utility in Florida. It is a Juno Beach, Florida-based power utility company serving roughly 5,145,225 customers and 11 million people in Florida.

Together, we can stop climate change and make a difference in the world.

Supported by  Our Climate, Defend Our Future, ACE, and Florida Student Power.
