We are immensely disappointed to see the veto of this bipartisan legislation supported by Republicans and Democrats alike. Florida is in dire need of reducing energy costs, and global heating pollution to protect our environment, and the actions of Gov. Ron DeSantis today does not represent that.

This decision undermines our collective efforts to achieve fiscal responsibility, energy independence, and environmental stewardship.

Transportation emissions account for 27% of all carbon emissions, making it the largest source of emissions in the country. By embracing electric vehicles, we could reduce energy costs, increase efficiency, and decrease our reliance on foreign oil. These are core values that align with principles of economic growth and national security.

Most importantly, by transitioning to electric vehicles and reducing harmful warming emissions, it would have allowed us to improve air quality, protecting the health and well-being of our communities all while ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for Flordians.

The vetoed bill (SB 284) enjoyed overwhelming bipartisan support, with approval ratings of 115-1 in the House and 38-0 in the Senate. This demonstrates a shared understanding of the economic and environmental benefits that electric vehicles offer.

By embracing this technology, Florida could have stimulated job growth, supported local businesses, and enhanced our state’s competitive edge in the clean energy revolution we are in. It is a missed opportunity to position Florida as a leader in sustainable innovation, driving economic prosperity and ensuring a brighter future for generations to come.

The CLEO Institute remains dedicated to fostering dialogue and raising awareness about the importance of clean energy solutions. Together, we can work towards a future where Florida, the Sunshine State, thrives economically, achieves energy independence with the power of the sun, and protects our environment for generations to come.
