The CLEO Institute Applauds Biden-Harris Administration and the EPA efforts in Curbing Methane Pollution from Oil & Gas

Raymer Maguire, Director of Policy & Campaigns

Miami, December 4th— The CLEO Institute, a leading advocate for environmental justice and climate action, applauds the recent announcement by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding new standards to reduce methane pollution. This significant step, led by President Biden and Administrator Michael S. Regan, aligns with the commitment to slash climate pollution by 50% by the end of this decade.

Methane, a dangerous pollutant threatening public health and exacerbating climate change, has long demanded attention. Oil and gas operations are the largest industrial source of methane, the main component in natural gas and far more potent than carbon dioxide in the short term. It is also responsible for about one-third of planet-warming emissions and the new super pollutant standard is therefore particularly vital for states like Florida on the frontlines of more damaging storms, rising seas, and soaring temperatures.

“The EPA’s decisive action to rein in methane pollution paired with the 2022 climate law, is a historic move, marking the first direct tax on planet warming pollution and making polluters pay” said Yoca Arditi-Rocha, Executive Director.

Environmental justice is a key component of a just transition and our mission. Today’s EPA announcement, part of a series of environmental standards promoted by the Solutions for Pollution coalition, represents a crucial step in protecting communities, especially those historically affected by power plant pollution. While CLEO welcomes this positive move, it also advocates for more aggressive limits on methane and urges swift action in finalizing robust pollution standards by May 2024. These efforts are crucial to achieving pollution reduction goals, safeguarding communities, and preventing the worst impacts of climate change.
